On a warm sunny spring Saturday morning in 2013 driving down a local 4 lane road in Danvers, Massachusetts, with the windows wide open, from behind me I heard a familiar sound. "Ferrari" I said out loud, although I was the only one in the car. That's gotta be a Ferrari. I know that sound. (Been involved with racing for many years, and have owned waaaay too many sports cars for any one enthusiast to be entitled to.)
The sound became LOUDER. It passed me rather quickly. I looked to the left, expecting to look down and see a low-slung bright red car.
But nope. It was just a dark blue Volkswagen. A Passat. Huhhh? Waazzzatt?
At the traffic light, I pulled up next to him. Only one guy in the car. Big smile on his face. Light turns green and he roars off. Pipes wide open. Swear it sounded just like a Ferrari.
Next traffic light, pulled right behind him. "What is that thing?" I was asking myself. On the back was a nondescript nomenclature that said W8. Zooomed off again.
"I WANT ONE OF THOSE !" I muttered to myself. What ever it was.
After a bunch of looking and research, I was able to discover that Volkswagen had indeed produced a small number of rather odd, but extremely cool cars with a "W" configured 8 cylinder motor. And found a very good original example for sale. Only an air flight away. But that's OK, I've done stuff like that before to be able to purchase a nice sports car.
So I jumped on Jet Blue out of Logan Airport in Boston and headed to DC.
Since that time, I have discovered that this is really is an odd duck. Basically nobody knows what it is, or why they built it. Even serious automobile magazines.
But I persisted, and eventually connected the dots. "Eureka" when eventually I figured it out.
So over the last several years, I have endeavored to chronicle the story of the VW W8. To that end, recently I was able to secure a new domain name, and believe it or not, yes, VWW8.COM was actually available. This website will also transfer to the new owner.
On this new site is my current missive on the history of this fine, and actually, verrry cool car. A real sleeper. Looks like a rather pedestrian Passat, but drives like an exotic sports car. Additionally there are three informative short videos at the end. Please watch all three. Will only take a couple of minutes.
My understanding is that VW's ad agency produced some great animation of the internal workings of the Bugatti Veyron W-16 for the launch of that car. Concurrently, they also crafted a short video showing the inner workings of the W-8. By watching both of those videos, the proverbial light bulb will click on over your head, and now, finally, you will understand the mystery of the Volkswagen W-8.
If this is such a cool car, why am I selling it? Good question. Several years ago I retired and moved to a log cabin deep into the woods of Maine. Tucked it into the barn and really never use it. Went a year or two without even being registered. It sits there, collecting dust as my third car. Just doesn't make any sense any more. Dusted it off, freshen it up. Time for a new home.
